Cuts has two halves: a real editor — timeline, camera, captions, sound — and an agent you talk to. You can cut everything by hand and never open the chat, or hand Cuts the footage and a goal and review what it builds. Most people end up somewhere in between. Cuts is an iPhone app, in English for now. And it isn't a platform: no feed, no followers, nothing posted on your behalf — your video goes where you take it. ## Signing in There are no passwords. Three ways in: - **Continue as guest.** No email, no account — just start. Your work is tied to your phone. - **Sign in with Apple.** One tap, done. - **Sign in with email.** Type your address, tap the link we send you. Guest is a real account, not a demo. When you're ready, link it to Apple or an email from the Account screen — everything you've made comes with you. ## Your first project Tap **+** on the Projects screen. Three ways to begin: - **Gallery** — pick footage from your Photos. - **Camera** — shoot right now. See [Shoot](/cuts/docs/shoot). - **Prompt** — start with words. A blank project opens straight into chat; tell Cuts what you're making. The moment footage lands in a project, Cuts starts reading it on your phone — transcript, beats, scenes, highlights. That analysis is free, always — it's what makes everything else work. ## What's free Free is a real plan: unlimited editing with two-minute exports (watermarked), the full analysis, AI music and voiceover, the agent for light use, a small monthly allowance of credits. Create as many as you like from the Projects screen; rename or delete them there too. Projects are yours alone — there's no shared editing. ## The editor Preview on top, timeline below. The timeline has three tracks: - **Video** — your clips, in order. See [Cut](/cuts/docs/cut). - **Music** — one music clip at a time. See [Music](/cuts/docs/music). - **Speech** — narration and voice. See [Speech & captions](/cuts/docs/speech-and-captions). The canvas is 9:16 — built for reels and shorts. Export sizes are covered in [Export & share](/cuts/docs/export-and-share). ## The rules that never change - **Editing is free.** Trims, splits, reordering, captions, text cards, music slicing — mechanical work never costs credits. Only AI jobs do. - **Everything is reversible.** Undo and redo work everywhere, including anything Cuts does to your timeline. - **Analysis runs on your phone.** Transcripts, beat grids, scene boundaries, highlights — computed right on the phone, free, private, and offline. Only the chat and cloud jobs need a connection. ## Snapping The timeline is magnetic. Clips snap to edges and — once your music is analyzed — to the beat, so cuts land where the track lands. If you'd rather clips didn't snap, turn **Auto Snap** off in Preferences. ## Variants Some changes — an enhanced clip, a different take — appear as variants on a rail. Tap one and the preview plays it live; commit with ✓ or step back with ✕. Stop, breathe, keep going. - **Front or rear** — with flash and torch where the hardware has them. - **Record delay** — 0, 3, or 10 seconds to get into position. - **Quality panel** — up to 4K. ## The teleprompter The camera has a teleprompter overlay: your script scrolls over the lens while you read. It auto-scrolls, you can edit it in place, and Cuts can write it for you — ask for a script in chat and it arrives in the prompter. See [Cuts, the agent](/cuts/docs/cuts-the-agent). ## The voice recorder For voiceovers: a live waveform, the teleprompter, and on-device noise cleanup before the recording lands on your speech track. More in [Speech & captions](/cuts/docs/speech-and-captions). ## Importing Bring footage from your Photos library, and audio from Files — formats in [Music](/cuts/docs/music). ## Permissions Cuts asks for access when you first need it, not at the door: - **Camera** — to record video for your project. - **Microphone** — to record audio with your video. - **Photos (add only)** — to save your exported videos. Importing goes through the system picker, so Cuts never needs access to your whole library. - **Notifications** — only if you ask Cuts to follow up. Ripple delete closes the gap behind a removed clip; clone duplicates one in place. ## Cutting to the beat Once a music track is on the timeline, its beat grid is live in the editor — clips snap to beats as you trim and move them. The grid comes from on-device analysis, so it's there whether the track was imported, extracted, or produced by Cuts. More in [Music](/cuts/docs/music). ## Speed Each clip has a speed control — slow a moment down or push through the boring part. For motion-aware slow motion — real frames, not a stretched clip — see [Polish](/cuts/docs/polish). ## Looks A project-wide look sets the color mood: warm, cool, film, mono, vivid. Clip-level filter effects are there too. One look for the whole piece beats five per clip — but that's your call. ## On every clip Every clip has its own volume and mute, its own size and position on the canvas, and a **Denoise** toggle for cleaning up noisy audio — see [Speech & captions](/cuts/docs/speech-and-captions). ## Text and stickers Text cards come in two kinds: plain, and animated motion titles. Stickers go anywhere. The track comes back a few minutes long, and Cuts slices the right piece onto your timeline. This is cloud generation, so it costs credits — a flat price, shown in the app — but it's included on every plan, Free too. - **Extract it.** Pull the audio out of any video in your project. - **Import it.** Bring MP3, WAV, AIFF, or M4A from Files. The music track holds one clip at a time — a reel wants one song. ## What analysis gives you The moment a track lands, Cuts reads it — right on your phone: tempo, the beat grid, downbeats, and where the energy is. From then on: - **Cuts snap to beats** while you edit — see [Cut](/cuts/docs/cut). - **Highlights** mark the track's best stretches — the hook, the drop — so you can slide your edit onto the part that matters instead of scrubbing for it. One caveat, stated plainly: on some sparse electronic tracks the bar's "one" can drift. Beats stay accurate — but if a downbeat-perfect cut matters, check the grid by ear. ## Balance The **mixer** has a fader per track and live metering — pull the music under the voice and watch the meters. Cuts also levels loudness, so what sounds right in the editor sounds right on the platform. --- # Speech & captions > Voice, transcripts, word-timed captions, dubbing, and voice cloning. > Part of the Cuts Guide (en) — https://ferment.run/cuts/docs (Markdown map: https://ferment.run/cuts/docs/index.md) > Canonical page: https://ferment.run/cuts/docs/speech-and-captions ## The speech track Three ways to put a voice on it: - **Record** — the voice recorder, with its teleprompter and live waveform. - **Extract** — the speech lifted out of a video clip. - **Synthesize** — your script, spoken in a stock voice (free on every plan) or your own cloned one. ## Transcripts Everything spoken gets transcribed on your phone — word by word, with timings, in 26 languages, offline. The transcript is what makes speech editable: it's how Cuts finds the dead air, the restarts, the sentence you actually meant to keep. The honest edges: the 26 are European languages plus Russian — no Asian-language transcription on the phone today — and there are no speaker labels; the transcript knows every word and when, not who said it. ## Captions Captions come straight from the transcript, timed to the word — with per-word highlighting if you want it. Pick a style and a layout, apply it everywhere with one switch, and they stay in sync when the edit changes. ## Cleaning up a voice Two things, both included on every plan, no credits: - **Denoise** — a per-clip toggle that strips background noise on-device. Flip it while playing to A/B. - **Leveling** — Cuts evens out loudness so quiet sentences and loud ones sit together. ## Dubbing Cuts can dub a clip into another language — 23 to choose from. Start from the **Dub** button on the project bar, or just ask in chat. Dubbing is cloud generation, so it needs a paid plan. The flow is deliberately two-step: 1. Cuts translates the transcript and synthesizes the voice, timed to the original phrasing. **You hear a preview first.** 2. If you like it — and after confirming the cost — Cuts renders the lip-synced video and swaps it onto your timeline. Captions re-derive in the new language automatically. The original clip is never touched. Re-dub as many times as you like; it always starts from the source. ## Your voice On paid plans, Cuts can clone your voice into your brand kit: it opens the recorder with a script in the teleprompter, you read it through, and from then on narration and dubs can sound like you. The on-device versions need a recent iPhone and cost a few credits each, on every plan, with the cost shown in the app. Heavier upscales run in the cloud on paid plans — priced by clip length with a five-second minimum, quoted before they run; [Your library](/cuts/docs/your-library) explains how cloud jobs get your footage. See [Speech & captions](/cuts/docs/speech-and-captions).) ## How it works Pick a clip and choose an enhancement from its **Variants**, or just ask in chat — "slow this one down" does the same thing. The result arrives as a variant next to the original: audition it, commit or step back, as in [The basics](/cuts/docs/the-basics). The original never disappears. ## When to polish Enhancement is the last pass, not the first. Credits pay for AI jobs, never for getting your work out. Export as many times as you like. ## Settings The canvas is 9:16, and export length grows with your plan — two minutes on Free, up to an hour on Pro, up to three hours on Max. Cuts is built for reels and shorts, but paid plans stretch to long-form. Quality goes up to 4K, in SDR or HDR. While it renders you watch live progress with the actual frames going by, and the finished video saves straight to your Photos library. From there, the system share sheet takes it anywhere — or post it yourself from the platform's own app. ## The watermark Free exports carry a small Ferment watermark. Any paid plan exports clean. ## Whose video is it? Yours. You own your footage and everything Cuts makes for you — on Free and on paid plans alike. Post it commercially, hand it to a client, sell the thing it advertises. That's where you talk to Cuts — an editing agent, not just an editor. ## What Cuts knows By the time you type, Cuts has already read the project: the transcript of everything spoken, the beat grid of your music, scene boundaries, the moments worth keeping. Cuts sees your footage — the frames, not the file names. You can hand Cuts more. Attach photos and videos, audio files, a voice note instead of typing — or screenshots: Cuts reads images, so a screenshot of comments under your last post is something it can work with. ## What Cuts does - **Edits.** From a single trim to rebuilding the whole timeline into a cut. Every change lands in the editor. - **Generates.** Video clips, images, music, narration, animated titles — see [Generate](/cuts/docs/generate). - **Plans and follows up.** Give Cuts a pile of footage and a goal, and the plan arrives in chat — with nudges when you ask for them. When Cuts needs your call, it asks — option sheets to pick from, previews to watch in chat, a plain confirm before anything big. ## Costs Some AI jobs are cheap and just run. For the expensive ones — where the price depends on your footage — Cuts quotes the cost in credits first and waits for your yes before spending anything. On paid plans you can keep going past it on credits — a few per message — or wait for the reset. Either way the editor never pauses; limits apply to the conversation, not your project. ## Honesty Cuts is young. It will sometimes cut the wrong moment or misread what you meant. Everything Cuts does to your timeline is reversible, and the cost gate means the expensive jobs never run without your yes. On paid plans, Cuts can make it — everything here starts in chat. ## What you can ask for - **A clip from words.** Describe the shot; Cuts generates it. - **A still, animated.** Give Cuts a photo — a product shot, a poster — and it moves. The most common ask, and usually the right one. - **A match for your footage.** Hand over reference images or clips, and the generation follows their style or keeps a character consistent. - **More of a clip.** Extend a shot past where you stopped recording — new seconds grow from the out-point. - **The same clip, changed.** Restyle existing footage, add and remove things. - **Images.** Generate stills, or edit the ones you have with plain instructions. Music and narration are generation too — and they're included on every plan, Free too; they live in [Music](/cuts/docs/music) and [Speech & captions](/cuts/docs/speech-and-captions). ## Quality and cost Video generation comes in two tiers: fast (720p) for drafts, standard (1080p) for the version you ship. When you're choosing between variants, explore fast and re-render only the winner at standard — Cuts will suggest the same. Video generation quotes its cost in credits and waits for your yes; cheap jobs like images just run. Either way, you're only charged when a job succeeds — the rules are in [Credits & plans](/cuts/docs/credits-and-plans). Generated video arrives in clips of 4–15 seconds — you build a reel from generated moments, not generate a reel. ## Jobs Generation runs in the cloud. Leave the app and the job keeps going; its progress lives in the jobs panel, and you can cancel there anytime — reserved credits come back. Cuts keeps three kinds of memory, each with its own reach. ## Taste Cuts keeps a profile of how you like things — pacing, caption style, the music you reach for, the endings you cut. It spans projects: what it learns cutting this week's reel shapes next week's. You don't fill it in; it grows from your corrections and your choices. ## Decisions Some choices apply for the whole project. Tell Cuts "the intro stays under three seconds" or "always my cloned voice for narration" and it locks that in — no re-litigating it three chats later. ## Brand Facts about your look and sound — "the logo never goes on the left" — live in your [brand kit](/cuts/docs/brand-kit), alongside your logos, colors, and cloned voice. Brand memory crosses projects: state a rule once and every reel after that follows it. ## Correcting it Memory is steerable in plain language. Ask Cuts what it remembers about you. Tell it to remember something. Tell it to forget something. Correct a wrong guess and the correction is what sticks; that's the whole mechanism. Fill it once; Cuts applies it without being asked. It's a paid-plan feature. ## What goes in - **Logos and colors** — the marks and palette Cuts should reach for. - **Media** — recurring assets: product shots, intro cards, backdrops. - **Voices** — your cloned voice, for narration and dubs. The cloning flow (and its consent) lives in [Speech & captions](/cuts/docs/speech-and-captions). - **Facts** — the rules of your brand, in plain words: "the logo never goes on the left", "never yellow", "sign off with the handle". Cuts holds them as working instructions. ## How it fills In chat. Hand Cuts a logo and say what it is. State a rule and ask it to remember. For a voice, Cuts opens the recorder with a script in the teleprompter and the result lands in the kit. ## What it changes With a kit in place, "make a product reel" already knows your colors, your marks, your voice, your rules. Cuts works from the goal, not a quota. ## Start with the goal "I'm a musician — I want to grow on socials." That's a brief Cuts can work with. It reads what you have — the footage, the projects, what's already gone out — asks what it's missing, and drafts the plan in chat: what to make, in what order, how often, for where. ## Coming back The plan is a conversation, not a board. Return whenever — Cuts checks where things stand first: what's shot, what's cut, what's exported — and moves the plan to match. Skipped a week? The plan moves with you. Choices you lock in stay locked; see [Memory](/cuts/docs/memory). ## Nudges Ask, and the plan follows you out of the app — "remind me to film Thursday", "nudge me when it's time to cut." Nudges arrive as push notifications; Cuts asks for notification permission in chat the first time it needs it. Tell Cuts to cancel a follow-up and it's gone. Nudges are limited by design — quiet hours, a daily ceiling. If there's nothing worth saying, Cuts stays quiet. ## Not a scheduler No calendar view, no posting queue, nothing published on your behalf. This chapter is the mechanics — the rules that hold whatever the current numbers are. ## What credits are Credits are what AI jobs run on: generating video, images, music, and narration, plus enhancements like slow motion, upscaling, and video denoise. Different jobs cost different amounts; 1 credit = $0.01, the same anchor the pricing page uses. Everything else comes with your plan and never touches credits: editing, on-device analysis, export, and the agent within its weekly allowance — past it, paid plans can continue on credits. Cancel a job in flight and the reserved credits come back. - **Expensive jobs quote first.** When the price depends on your footage — dubbing, generation — Cuts shows the cost and waits for your yes. Cheap jobs just run. - **Plan credits reset monthly** and don't roll over. - **Packs never expire.** Buy credits when you need them; they kick in automatically after your plan credits run out, and they survive plan changes — even a downgrade to Free. - **Credits never unlock plan features.** What your plan includes is the boundary; credits pay for usage inside it. On Free, that means credits go to on-device enhancement plus AI music and voiceover — the video and image generators stay a paid-plan feature. ## Free and paid Free is for trying real edits: unlimited editing with two-minute exports (watermarked), full analysis, AI music and voiceover, the agent for light use, and a monthly credit allowance. Free can't buy packs — if you run dry, wait for the reset or upgrade. Paid plans remove the watermark and open up the rest: more agent, more credits, longer exports, [cloud backup](/cuts/docs/your-library), voice cloning and brand kits, and [video and image generation](/cuts/docs/generate). The [pricing page](/pricing) has the current shape. ## Subscriptions - **Same price everywhere.** iOS costs what the web costs. - **Cancel anytime.** You keep the plan until the end of what you've paid for, then move to Free. Cancel where you subscribed: web subscriptions in your account settings, App Store subscriptions in your Apple settings. - **Refunds.** Web purchases are generally non-refundable, but if something went wrong, write to [support@ferment.run](mailto:support@ferment.run) and we'll try to make it right. All the analysis — transcripts, beats, scenes, highlights — runs there too. On Free, footage isn't uploaded at all; only the compact results of analysis sync with your account. ## Cloud backup On paid plans you can turn on **Cloud Backup** in Preferences, and your originals copy up to your cloud library. It's optional and off until you say otherwise. Storage depends on your plan — see [pricing](/pricing). Backup earns its keep twice: your footage survives your phone, and cloud jobs start with what they need — generation and cloud enhancement work on uploaded media. ## Uploads for jobs When a cloud job runs on footage that isn't backed up, the upload is transient: Cuts uploads only the piece the job needs and deletes it right after. Large uploads stay off cellular unless you flip the **Cellular Data** switch in Preferences. Files run up to 10 GB each. ## A new phone Sign in with the same account and your projects come along — the structure, the chat, the analysis. Media follows only where it can: what was backed up re-downloads on demand; originals that lived only on the old phone are wherever you keep them, usually Photos. On Free, that means moving footage yourself. ## If you downgrade Nothing is held hostage. Your work is on your phone and stays there. Cloud backup stops syncing new footage, but what's already backed up remains downloadable. Unspent pack credits keep working. Redeem codes live there too, and so do your billing receipts. ## Privacy, plainly - Cuts isn't a social platform. Nothing you make is public, shown to other users, or sold. - On Free, your footage stays on your phone — analysis runs on-device and only its compact results sync. - Cloud backup is optional and off by default. Uploads for cloud jobs are deleted after the job finishes. - Voice cloning happens only with your explicit consent — see [voice consent](/legal/voice-consent). Link it to Apple or an email in Account and it becomes portable — everything you've made comes along. Guest accounts left untouched for a year are deleted, as our [terms](/legal/terms) describe. ## Managing the subscription Cancel where you subscribed — the how, and the rest of the money rules, live in [Credits & plans](/cuts/docs/credits-and-plans). ## Deleting your account Account deletion is in the Account screen. It erases your projects, your media, and your cloud library. Before you delete, pull down anything still in your cloud library — your exports are already in Photos. Cuts has a real Free plan: unlimited editing, 2-minute exports (with a small watermark), full on-device analysis, AI music and voiceover, the agent for light use, and a small monthly credit allowance. Paid plans open up video and image generation, cloud backup, voice cloning, longer exports, and remove the watermark. Your footage and everything Cuts makes for you is yours, on Free and paid plans alike — commercial use included, no license tiers. See [Export & share](/cuts/docs/export-and-share). ## Does Cuts post to my social accounts? No. Cuts doesn't connect to your accounts and never posts on your behalf. It plans and makes the videos; you publish them. See [The plan](/cuts/docs/the-plan). ## Are my videos uploaded to Cuts servers? On Free, no — analysis runs on your phone and only its compact results sync. On paid plans, cloud backup is optional and off by default. When a cloud job needs footage that isn't backed up, Cuts uploads only the piece the job needs and deletes it after. See [Your library](/cuts/docs/your-library). ## What happens if a job fails? Two minutes. Cuts is built for reels and shorts, not long-form. See [Export & share](/cuts/docs/export-and-share). ## What languages does Cuts work in? Transcription and captions: 26 languages, on the phone — European languages plus Russian. Dubbing: 23 languages. The app itself speaks English for now. Media that was backed up re-downloads on demand; originals that lived only on the old phone are wherever you keep them, usually Photos. Cancel where you subscribed — web subscriptions in your account settings, App Store subscriptions in your Apple settings. You keep the plan until the end of what you've paid for, then move to Free. On paid plans, yes — clips of 4–15 seconds from words, stills, or reference footage, with the cost quoted before anything runs. You build a reel from generated moments, not generate a reel.
